چکیده

If the mermaid legend evokes more of mythology than of pathology, its origin very probably lies in ancient observations of certain types of human monstrosities. Human sirens are not as rare as is sometimes thought; I have been able to examine two cases within the past year, and during that time I have been told of several others. I shall talk today of the usual findings and attempt to draw certain wider conclusions. The fusion of the inferior limbs, the symelia (Fig. 1), which constitutes the characteristic element of the malformation to the observer, is not the only abnormality in these cases (Potter. 1952). The more constant findings in monsters of this general type may be summarized as follows (see Table 1): 1. Flexion and inversion in external rotation of the lower limbs. 2. Anomalies of the lumbar and sacral spine. 3. Imperforate anus. 4. Agenesis of the kidneys and urinary tract. 5. Agenesis of the internal genital organs, with the exception of the gonads. The visceral anomalies are constant and uniform. It is these anomalies which are incompatible with life, while the symelia is the least grave and the more variable of the malformations presented by the siren. There are even sirenoid monsters in whom

Mermaids are Real!! Sirenomelia: A Case of Mermaid Baby

We report a case of sirenomelia baby (mermaid syndrome) born to a thirty years old female at 36 weeks of gestation. It is a rare syndrome in which there is fusion of lower limbs. Classification of caudal regression syndrome (CRS) from sirenomelia is still debated. According to some authors, this syndrome should be classified separately from caudal regression syndrome and is likely to be the res...

Sirenomelia: A Rare Presentation

We are presenting two cases of Sirenomelia (Mermaid Syndrome), which is an extreme example of the caudal regression syndrome. It invariably presents with lower limb fusion, sacral and pelvic bony anomalies, absent external genitalia, imperforate anus, and renal agenesis or dysgenesis. There are approximately 300 cases reported in the literature, 15% of which are associated with twinning, most o...

Sirenomelia: the Mermaid Syndrome

Sirenomelia (the Mermaid Syndrome) is a rare and lethal congenital anomaly with an incidence of one in 100,000 of normal pregnancies. It is an extremely rare set of birth defects, which can vary in expression. The condition gets its name from one of the defects present, which is a fusing of the legs. The fused nature of the legs has been compared to a mermaid in appearance, hence the name. The ...

Sirenomelia Syndrome (caudal Dysgenesis): a Case Report

Sirenomelia is a rare congenital anomaly with an incidence of one in 100,000 pregnancies. It is also called as Mermaid Syndrome because of fused leg, giving appearance of mermaid’s tail. The cause of the condition is probably due to abnormalities in gastrulation in caudal segments. It was initially termed caudal regression, but it is clear that structures do not regress, they simply do not form...

Osteological development of the vertebral column, paired, dorsal and anal fins in Rutilus caspicus, Pravdin (1927) (Teleostei: Cyprinidae)

Study of the osteological development in fishes is important from fisheries, biology and aquaculture points of views. It can be used as an early bio-indicator of non-optimal rearing conditions. The Caspian roach, Rutilus caspicus is a native cyprinid fish of the Caspian Sea that its artificial propagation has fulfilled in hatcheries to recruit its natural stocks. Hence, this study was conducted...
